JOHN LLOYD on Angel Locsin: 'Matagal din akong pumila'[/size]

While still admitting to neither here nor there on his relationship with Shaina Magdayao, actor JOHN LLOYD Cruz is excited about something else: Working with Angel Locsin.

At the media gathering to launch LLOYDY -- as his fans call him -- as the new endorser of Jack N’ Jill’s line of Magic products, he tells Bulletin Entertainment in a one-on-one interview about his pairing with Locsin on the forthcoming ABS-CBN teleserye, "Imortal."

“Eto nga, it’s my only time [to work with her]. Kasi matagal din akong pumila eh. Siyempre [nauna na] si Piolo [Pascual]. Tapos niligawan pa ni Luis [Manzano].Nabakuran kaagad…,” he joked.

When pointed out that he may get in trouble with Luis for saying that, he laughed, “Okay lang, tinext ko na siya kanina, nasabi ko na [na babanggitin ko siya].”

As for Shaina, however, Cruz has this to say: “’Yung sa akin lang, ang hinihiling namin ay allowance, [that people] give us the right time for us to speak about it… Darating tayo dun.”

The LLOYDY Factor

Once the “are-they/aren’t they” inquiries have been dealt with, it is easy to see why Magic has decided to let the talented actor represent their brand.

“Young, fun, dynamic and spontaneous,” was how Magic’s senior brand manager, Karla Ramos, described their new endorser, whose influence and likeability they hope would strengthen their already good standing in the market.

By his own admission, Cruz said he was a very shy child in school and even during family gatherings. “Pero ‘pag pinasayaw mo ako ng running man,” he laughed, giving an indication that, even then, he could bust out with an uncharacteristic display of spunk. “May pitik din naman,” he kidded.

Just like the latest brand he is endorsing, Cruz seems easily accessible to many types of fans; yet is also quite a surprise to those who have just met him.

Just as many variants of Magic —from Magic Flakes and the tasty Magic Chips to the Creams and Roundwhich— could cater to a wide variety of buyers, Cruz has the type of personality and showbiz persona that make him likeable across the board. And just as Magic holds a lot of surprise for avid snackers, Cruz is a revelation in himself—a near-irresistible blend of sensible personality and showbiz charisma.

When asked if he thought he was a good fit for the brand, he joked, “Yeah… I can be salty at times…”

Life’s magic: Inspiration and passion

”Yung inspiration, imposibleng sa isang tao lang galing,” Cruz responded to a media query.

“Family and friends are the source of happiness in my life. Also, career and inspiration. Inspiration comes from everywhere... family, your passion,” he said, then easily added, “And all the beautiful ladies like you [in the audience].”

Smooth, we say. But he isn’t a 13-going-14 year “veteran” of show business for nothing. Having had his start at the age of 13, Cruz has become one of the most familiar faces in the business. He’s also earned critical praises for his acting chops.

But in his humble opinion, “Hindi ko talaga maisip kung paano ako tumagal nang ganito… Kasi in the beginning I just wanted to work. I just wanted to help my family na at that time we were financially challenged. And then I started realizing the fact that I love acting…”

Despite this profession being a magnet for intrigues (to which he says, “Depende sa artista yan eh. If you give them the chance to pry… talagang susugurin ka niyan. You get what you give”), Cruz believes credibility will get one far—be it in acting or endorsement deals.

“Hindi naman lahat ng times ang artista parang saint. Kahit naman magkamali ka pwede mo namang makuha ‘yung credibility mo as a person… It’s how you rise above it, I guess. ‘Yung dignity… in trying to live life, trying to establish and protect your name in this business.”

Cruz has had a successful career so far, but one true passion in his heart is his desire to work for the likes of UN or UNICEF, “being a part of a community… like in Africa. Kahit sa Pilipinas. Kaya lang dito mahirap, kasi medyo kilala na rin tayo, parang ang hirap mag-concentrate sa objective. Ang talagang best option ko is abroad.”

Believing that timing is everything, however, he feels this might not happen just yet. “Meron din kasi tayong sinusuportahan, not [just] family members. Kung baga, pwede mong sabihin na may mga umaasa. And ‘yung mga ganitong klaseng opportunity [like showbiz], hindi to madalas sa buhay ng tao.”

The time may not be now, but he knows he will fulfill this dream “in this lifetime,” he says in all seriousness.

What he doesn’t discount in the near future is working with rumored flame, Magdayao. “Why not? I’ve seen some of her work and I find her a really good actress,” he said. “And kung may isang magandang material… kahit hindi naman love story… sana magka-trabaho kami, like in one project.”

JOHN LLOYD Cruz said that he and the Kanto Boys members Luis Manzano and Billy Crawford accepted to roles of guest co-hosts of Wowowee not to pursue high ratings nor outdo what Robin Padilla did for the show, but to entertain. “Tinanggap namin ‘yon, hindi naman para lagpasan ‘yung na-maintain ni Kuya Binoe (Robin),” he said during the press conference of his new endorsement, Jack ‘n Jill Magic products. “Paano mo naman susundan ‘yung ganoon ka-impressive na trabaho? Si Kuya Binoe, tumayo lang andami nang nai-entertain in many ways. ‘Pag nakita mo sa TV talagang tumitigil ang lahat. Parang aabangan ng lahat kung ano ang sasabihin niya. Mahirap sundan ‘yon.”

LLOYDY further explained that he is not bothered that critics continue to compare the Kanto Boys to Robin’s impact on Wowowee because rather than competing with anyone, they simply want to do their jobs right as Wowowee guest hosts. “Kung ang intensyon mo ay makatulong at makapag-entertain kagaya ng core intention ng show, eh wala kang dapat sigurong ipag-alala,” LLOYDY pointed out. “Kung hindi mo man na-maintain ‘yung pina-prioritize nila at this point, kung ratings ba o kung anuman, eh kumbaga siguro hindi naman kawalan ‘yon.” He believes that whoever will be guest hosts of Wowowee should stay true to the show’s primary objective to entertain above other concerns.

JOHN LLOYD also expressed his gratitude to Robin for defending the Kanto Boys from detractors and calling on Wowowee fans to support them the same way that they supported him during his two-week hosting stint on the noon-time show. “Malaking bagay para sa amin ‘yon. Kumbaga kasi medyo mabigat ang trabaho na ‘yan, eh, hindi trabaho ‘yan na basta-basta ooohan ng isang artista lalo na pagsara ni Kuya Robin. Pakiramdam ko na mas lalong ang lahat mas tumutok sa show.

To those who have been critical about the Kanto Boys hosting Wowowee, LLOYDY had this to say. “Sa mga kumbaga hindi gaanong favorable ang opinyon sa amin about doing the show, eh, sinubukan naman po namin. Gusto ko lang magpasalamat kay Kuya Binoe dahil kahit medyo nag-fail tayo sa pagmi-maintain nung iniwan n’yo, eh meron siyang magagandang sinasabi tungkol sa amin.”

JOHN LLOYD not ready to discuss Shaina

DESPITE the pressure they face from the movie press to finally announce that they’re already an item, JOHN LLOYD Cruz still keeps everyone hanging with regard to him and Shaina Magdayao.

“What I’m asking is for people to give us more time before we answer the issue. Definitely, we’ll get there. Even if I like to give my piece regarding the matter, I feel it’s not yet the right time to do so. For one, I’m not the only one involved here, right? If ever I come up with a decision to speak up, it should be a mutual decision between us,” he states.

For the past months, there have been photos circulating where he and Shaina are caught together in various places.

“Well, as they say, pictures won’t lie. And we don’t intend to hide. It’s just that we are waiting for the right timing.”

The award-winning actor knows that as celebrities, they are subject to intrusion of privacy.

“I perfectly understand. It’s fine with me. I just don’t like the idea that I should answer because it’s my obligation to satisfy the fans’ curiosity. I believe that I would share my piece to the public because I feel like doing it and I wasn’t just forced,” explains JOHN LLOYD.

JOHN LLOYD: Not twice, but thrice




JOHN LLOYD Cruz did it again — not twice but thrice. He is Guillermo Mendoza Foundation’s 2009 Box-Office King for Star Cinema’s You Changed My Life, opposite Sarah Geronimo. Sarah is the Box-Office Queen.

“I started to receive congratulatory messages last week,” recalls JOHN LLOYD on how the good news reached him. “I’m very happy that for the third consecutive year my movie earned the highest (amount) at the tills. It makes me feel proud, very proud.”

The award is proof that JOHN LLOYD, Jack ’n Jill Magic’s latest celebrity endorser has a fan base.

“It’s a manifestation that many look forward to my projects,” he says. “Times are different now. It’s a TV generation and Internet generation. It’s difficult to make people go to the cinema and pay P160 or P180.”

Does JOHN LLOYD attribute his success to a certain magic or charm?

“I have to be able to choose the right project,” he replies. “Much of my success is material driven. I try to aim for quality instead of quantity of work to be accommodated.”

Thus, JOHN LLOYD enjoys commercial success and keeps on raising the bar.

Although fans watched him in Miss You Like Crazy with Bea Alonzo and see him in A.S.A.P. XV, everybody wishes JOHN LLOYD to be back on primetime.

“My latest project is Imortal which is coming out very soon,” he shares. “They have started shooting. I’ll be back on TV. And it’s been a while and please do watch out for it.”

On and off cam, JOHN LLOYD finds it helpful to bring packs of Magic Flakes to immediately relieve his hunger pangs. The crackers are perfect for his low-fat, low-calorie diet. Magic is his replacement to his carbo intake. JOHN LLOYD pairs it with something rich in protein. He says, “It’s good to have something light, not fattening, and convenient to eat. I always have Magic Flakes wherever I go. Instead of giving street children money, I give them Magic Flakes.”

Does JOHN LLOYD miss the late pack-ups and early calls?

“Not really. Who wants to be very busy?,” he answers. “But I’m excited to go back to work. I’m excited to go back to TV — and to do something different and new.”

The actor shares his idea of a hectic TV schedule and a free day:

7 or 8 a.m. — I’m on the set. If there’s travel time to consider like going to Tagaytay, I allot one and a half hours to get there. I have to be up and about at 4:30 a.m. or 5 a.m. I study the script before heading to work. We sometimes memorize the lines on the set.

I often skip breakfast. TV work is demanding. During breaks or in between takes, I would rather sleep (to take a rest). They wake me up just before shooting resumes. I have a little time to eat, retouch, go to the bathroom and freshen up.

Morning of the next day — I wrap up work and head to home.

6:30 a.m. — I wake up. I’m now a morning person. When I mountain bike, I should be ready at 5:30 a.m. or 6 a.m. I go to the trail. I’m through before 12 noon. I’ve been a mountain bike enthusiast for a year. One afternoon, my cousins and I decided to check out bike parts since my cousin’s friend started to bike already. We wanted to know what’s the best way to go about it. Either you buy the parts and assemble them or you purchase a built bike?

If I have no biking activity, I wake up at 8 a.m. or 8:30 a.m. I also try to catch the news in the morning. I like to rise early so I can do many things or maximize my time.

Lunch time — I dine with my family.

1 p.m. and onwards — I go to the bike shop, hang out there and check out new items. I also see my friends. I hardly go out. I would rather stay at my new house.

Dinner time — I’m at home with family.

JOHN LLOYD Cruz feels energized whenever he goes biking

JOHN LLOYD Cruz is turning 27 this month and he admits he's not getting any younger. So, part of his priorities now is to keep his body fit by biking regularly.

"If I may mention lang at this point, 'yong talagang pagiging fit, hindi siya obligasyon sa akin. I wanna be fit. Kasi, I owe it to myself now. I'm 26 now, I'm not getting any younger," says the three-time Box Office King in an interview during the press launch of his new Jack n' Jill Magic endorsement recently.

The Kapamilya actor said he may not have a well-sculpted body, but he's happy with it and he wants to keep it that way.

He explained to PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal), "Sabi nila kasi after 25, kung ano ang body mo, 'yon na ang body mo for the rest of your life. Talagang dapat alagaan mo ang katawan mo. 'Yong health and fitness mo, talagang dapat if not five, nasa top three priorities mo."

So, how does JOHN LLOYD avoid gaining unwanted weight? The award-winning actor turns to biking.

JOHN LLOYD was introduced into this new hobby a year ago while he was hanging out with his cousins. He recalled, "Parang one afternoon, magkakasama kami ng pinsan ko sa bahay, nasa gazebo kami nila. Nagkukuwentuhan kami, pumasok nga 'yong, ''Yong kaibigan ko nagba-bike ngayon. Bike tayo.' So, may mga ilang bike shops ang napuntahan namin, mga tatlo. 'Yong last 'yong kay Manu (Sandejas) sa White Plains (Knobbies in Quezon City). Doon na, doon ko na nahanap 'yong gusto ko."

Since then, the local celebrity added biking to his busy showbiz schedule.

"Kapag hindi ako nakakapag-bike parang I feel weak. Kailangan na, e. Parang it gives me a certain energy kapag nakakapag-bike ako," said JOHN LLOYD.

JOHN LLOYD also mentioned that whenever he sets his feet on the pedals, he doesn't feel guilty when he eats too much after a workout.

"In a week, if I know na I have time to actually go biking or pilates, medyo ina-allow ko naman ang sarili ko na kumain leisurely. Pero kapag alam kong medyo tight ang schedule ko, I just try to watch what I eat kasi wala kang time to work out," he said.

The Star Magic talent usually goes trail biking in San Mateo, which is actually his favorite spot. "Doon ako madalas kasi malapit sa house ko and maraming trails. Iba-iba, like, from basic [to] medyo difficult and medyo unbelievable," he added.

JOHN LLOYD says he used to go to the gym to keep his weight, but the current fad among celebrities didn't suit him.

"'Yong gym kasi, it didn't work for me," he said. "Well, alam mo, kanya-kanya lang naman talaga 'yan. May mga tao na para sa kanila 'yong they work out sa gym, they lift weights. Nagkataon lang na hindi 'yon para sa akin."

JOHN LLOYD Cruz on being Box-Office King for three consecutive years: ‘Napakagandang birthday gift’

JOHN LLOYD Cruz will get a very special gift just two days before his birthday, June 24, when he will be awarded the Box-Office King Award from Guillermo Tolentino Memorial Scholarship Foundation. LLOYDY has won this award three years in a row. “I’m very excited. Napakagandang regalo,” began the actor at the Greenwich product launch in SM Megamall last June 8. The actor will be awarded for his performance in the movie You Changed My Life, while his leading lady for the said movie, Sarah Geronimo, will get the Box-Office Queen Award. Coincidentally, the movie’s prequel A Very Special Love in 2008, both gave LLOYDY and Sarah the Box-Office King and Queen awards, respectively.

The dramatic actor cannot deny that getting the award for the third time is an honor he will forever treasure. “Nakapa-special ng award na ‘pag nakarating ka [in your] 50s or when you grow old, you look back and puwede mong sabihing ‘yung 2007, 2008, and 2009 mga pelikula ko ‘yung may pinakamaraming nanood and napaka-special ng award,” he stressed. However, LLOYDY explained that while he is glad about the recognition, what is more important to him is that people acknowledge his effort to entertain with or without awards. “Dati either by Miss Ai (Ai-Ai de las Alas) or Kris Aquino, sinabi nila kahit wala, kahit hindi mapunta sa akin ‘yung award, ‘yung Box-Office King [award] parang okay lang.”

LLOYDY said that he is also pleased that just like last year, Sarah will also receive the same award because the actress-singer has been more than just a leading lady to him. “Para sa isang ka-love team o katrabaho natin ng ilang beses, si Sarah will always be special [to me], in the same way na naging special sa akin si Bea (Alonzo). Sabi ko nga, itong mga taong ito part ng kung anuman ‘yung narating ko [at] napatunayan. So malaking bahagi sila ng aking professional at personal life.”

The actor shared that he usually gets some days off during his birthday week. but this might not be possible this year. “Dati kasi lagi akong mayroong birthday week. Usually ang ginagawa ko kung hindi kaya ng five days, at least man lang mga four days and I usually spend it with my family or friends either here or sa ibang lugar [like] sa beach o kung anuman. But now, since I’m about to start taping for Imortal (his teleserye with Angel Locsin), medyo time to work muna and gusto ko ring ma-experience ‘yung habang nagtatrabaho nagse-celebrate ng birthday ko. So okay na rin.”

JOHN LLOYD Cruz repeatedly pleaded to the concerned people to stop spreading rumors about him.

This came after the media asked for his reaction to Cristy Fermin's "revelation" recently on TV5's entertainment show Juicy­ that JOHN LLOYD and Ruffa Gutierrez were spotted biking together at The Fort in Taguig.

"Hindi 'yon totoo. Wala siyang katotohanan kahit one percent," JOHN LLOYD straightforwardly told the press during the press launch of his new Greenwich Pizza TV commercial yesterday, June 8, at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.

The 26-year-old actor said he has no idea where this news came from and he has no intention of knowing about it.

He explained, "You know, kapag inisa-isa natin ang balita kung saan nanggagaling, mauubos ang panahon natin to actually live our lives. Kasi, may mga bagay tayo na pinagtutuunan ng pansin na mas may worth sa atin."

As much as possible, the Kapamilya actor does not want to give attention to such unconfirmed news.

He said, "Hindi ko na puwedeng kuwestiyunin ang mga inilalabas ng iba. Hindi mo puwedeng kuwestiyunin ang intention nila kasi you're in this business. So, talagang wala ka nang magagawa kung hindi asahan na talagang may mga taong magsasalita or magpa-fabricate ng mga bagay-bagay na walang basehan."

Although he already accepted that intrigues are part of the profession he has chosen, JOHN LLOYD said it still affects him.

"Truth is, hindi ako taong-bato. Nakakalungkot 'yan," the actor confessed. "But 'yan ang reality ng mundong pinasok ko. Walang problema sa akin, wala naman akong minamasama. 'Yon nga lang po, I'm sorry to tell you, it's not true."

Then, he appealed, "Sana ma-realize din nila na sana tama na. Baka may pamilyang naaapektuhan or may mga taong nag-iisip ng hindi dapat isipin or may mga tao na tunay na naaapektuhan sa balitang ito, na masyado nang seryoso ang dating sa kanila. Baka may mangyari pa in the future, God knows when, na hindi kanais-nais or hindi maganda."

To set things clear, JOHN LLOYD said he rarely communicates with Ruffa nowadays. "Kumbaga, yes, but it's not that active anymore—'yong communication or 'yong friendship. Kasi, pareho naman kami na nasa magkaibang istasyon ngayon and marami siyang ginagawa na kailangan ng focus niya at ganun din naman ako."

When asked if this issue would affect his rumored relationship with young actress Shaina Magdayao, the multi-awarded actor deflected the question by saying, "You know what, if you try to imagine the bigger picture and the real picture of the situation, baka dapat i-consider nang tama na ito baka kasi mas seryosong bagay na ang puwedeng maapektuhan. Kasi, may pamilya 'yong tao. It's not nice na palaging pinag-uusapan ang mga bagay na ganyan kasi hindi maganda ang puwedeng maging epekto niyan sa mga taong involved sa buhay namin."

JOHN LLOYD Cruz denies dating Ruffa Gutierrez anew

MANILA, Philippines - Hunk actor JOHN LLOYD Cruz vehemently denied persistent rumors romantically linking him to actress-host Ruffa Gutierrez.

Gutierrez and Cruz, both of whom repeatedly denied the rumors since last year, were reportedly spotted biking together at The Fort only recently.

In a press conference for Cruz's newest endorsement, the “You Changed My Life” star maintained that there was no truth to the speculations. He also said although he is saddened by “fabricated” and “baseless” reports, these are all part of his job as an actor.

"And sana ma-realize din nila na tama na kasi baka may isang pamilyang na-apektuhan o may mga taong nag-iisip ng hindi dapat isipin. Or may mga taong tunay na naapektuhan sa balitang ito na masyado ng seryoso ang dating sa kanila. At baka may mangyari pa in the future or God knows when na hindi kanais-nais or maganda," Cruz said.

Gutierrez and Cruz became friends when they did the hit series "I Love Betty La Fea."

Cruz got the same honor for 2 consecutive years for the movies "One More Chance," with Bea Alonzo, and "You Changed My Life," with with Pop Star Princess Sarah Geronimo.
