ABANTE TONITE JOE BARRAMEDA OCT. 10, 2005.

Life in Dubai
Dubai: The Movie portrays the lives and loves of overseas Filipino workers in the emirate. More than 8 million Filipinos work overseas. Sometimes their real-life stories are of rags to riches. But more often than not, many expats tell a story of hardship and strife. In the movie Anak, Vilma Santos and Claudine Baretto acted out the hardships and sacrifices of a mother working as a domestic helper in Hong Kong. In Milan, what began as a quest to find a lost wife, ended up in finding a new love in the streets and vineyards of Italy . Now, the latest movie to highlight the lives of overseas Filipino workers is Dubai: The Movie. Orphans Raffy ( Aga Muhlach) and Andrew (JOHN LLOYD Cruz) have only each other to depend on. Raffy being the elder brother dreams of providing a better future for both of them. He has spent the last nine years of his life working in a courier service company in Dubai , so that he can save enough money to eventually migrate to Canada with his brother. His work keeps him in close contact with other Filipino overseas workers and has made him popular in the Filipino community. The story takes a twist when Andrew lands in Dubai and meets Faye ( Baretto), one of Raffy’s many girlfriends. Faye and Andrew’s friendship grows despite their age difference. Unfortunately, Raffy realises that he too is in love with Faye. When Andrew finds out, the brothers battle bitterly over their lady love. In the end, what they choose and achieve are not as planned. But their experiences lead to new beginnings in their lives. Dubai is a moving and intimate story. Shot in Dubai – a modern-day paradise for Filipinos – the movie offers inspiration and hope to all overseas workers. Facts about DubaiAlthough the movie was scheduled to premiere in Manila on September 28, Aga Muhlach (below), JOHN LLOYD Cruz, director Rory Quintos plus a two-man crew came to Dubai on September 17 to shoot an alternate ending for the movie. It was Muhlach’s ideafor an ending that would make the audience cry. The original script by Ricky Lee and Shaira Mella Salvador went through 12 revisions and all of them contributed in fine-tuning the much-anticipated movie. The theme song of Dubai: The Movie, Ikaw Lamang, is an original composition by songwriter Ogie Alcasid. It was sung by none other than Mr. Pure Energy himself, Gary Valenciano. Dubai is set to premiere simultaneously today in Milan, Vancouver, Vienna, Hawaii, Saipan, Guam, San Francisco and, of course, Dubai.

PEOPLE TONIGHT TATTLE Nel Alejandrino Oct. 21, 2005.
Nakatutuwang each time na nasa stage ang grupo, pandemonium almost always broke loose. Sabi nga tuloy ni Aga, who served as spokesperson for the group; "Nakatataba ng pusong malaman mong appreciated ang inyong ginawa. The group was told that there are now about 65,000 Filipinos sa Dubai. All of them, muli sa aming kausap, ay naka-relate sa characters na ginampanan nina Aga (as Raffy), JOHN LLOYD (Andrew), Pokwang (Cookie) at Claudine (Faye). Kung sabagay, mismong si Ricky Lee, na siyang nag-conceptualized ng story ng Dubai and who also wrote the script in collaboration with Shaira Salvador, revealed that he based the story of Dubai sa mga karanasan ng ilang Pilipinong nagta-trabaho sa Dubai na kanyang na-interview.

The one na kausap naming also works for a cargo company, like Raffy, the character na ginagampanan ni Aga. For his job he gets from P15,000 to P20,000 a month. Which is not much, he said so himself. "Pero, pinagtitiyagaan na namin ito. Kesa manatili kami sa Pilipinas na walang trabaho," further ay sabi ng aming kausap, who said business management graduate siya from a named university in Quezon City.

Of the four stars in Dubai, naka-relate masyado si Pokwang sa papel na kanyang ginampanan as an OFW (overseas Filipino worker). She was one an OFW. Pokwang worked in Abu Dhabi, which is a two-hour ride from Dubai and the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Dubai was also shown in Abu Dhabi, where about 80,000 Filipinos naman are reportedly residing at nagtatrabaho. And like in Dubai, sa bawat screening umaapir onstage sina Aga, Claudine, JOHN LLOYD at Pokwang to personally greet the moviegoers. We asked Pokwang how she would compare Abu Dhabi to when she was still working there seven years ago.

TATTLE Nel Alejandrino People's Tonight Oct. 22, 2005.
IT was an entirely different ballgame ang narasan ng grupo ng Star Cinema at ABS-CBN when they proceeded to London after the premiere of the movie, Dubai, in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. In London, nagkaroon din ng four screenings in one day ang Dubai. Ginanap ito sa Odeon in West End. Very close to this theater was another theater na ang palabas naman ay ang play na Oliver Twist. That particular day n ipinalabas ang Dubai sa Odeon West End, mas di hamak na 'nilusob' ng manonood (na karamihan ay Pilipino, of course) ang Dubai kesa Oliver Twist. This prompted daw the theater (showing Oliver Twist) manager to ask: "Why, what play is showing there? "It's A Philippine made movie," he was told.

And how. But their question to the movie as more absorbing and intence. If the movie Dubai was a fulfillment of a promise which Star Cinema managing director Malou Santos made to the Filipino community in Dubai nang mag-premiere ang pelikulang Milan sa Dubai nearly two years ago, Malou again made a promise to the Filipino community in London that one of Star Cinema's projects for 2006 will be filmed in London.

Originally, according to Raffy Jison, managing director for ABS-CBN Europe, tatlong screening lang ang balak nilang gawin for the movie. But there was a popular demand na magkaroon ng fourth screening. And it proved worth it. dahil, tulad ng earlier three screenings, filled to capacity din ang puwedeng ituring na last full show.

The Philippine Star 10/24/2005
Aga & Charlene’s ‘unlikely’ honeymoon
The recent trip to Dubai and London of Aga Muhlach and Charlene Gonzalez could have served as another honeymoon for the couple after nearly five years of marriage. Except that in this particular trip of theirs, they were with the group of Star Cinema, producer of Aga’s current blockbuster Dubai, and ABS-CBN, mother outfit of Star Cinema.
They were in these two international key cities for the premiere of Dubai, directed by Rory Quintos, and co-starring Aga with Claudine Barretto, JOHN LLOYD Cruz and comedienne Pokwang. All the four major stars mentioned attended the premiere of Dubai, actually not just in Dubai and London but also in Abu Dhabi, which is a two-hour drive from Dubai.
The reception to the movie, particularly of the Filipino community, in each of the cities mentioned overwhelmed the group, most especially Aga, Claudine, JOHN LLOYD and Pokwang. They had to literally grope for words everytime they ascended the stage to thank the moviegoers who mostly came in drove.
Most of those who have seen Dubai, which is the story of two closely-knit brothers working in Dubai and the woman who came between them, admitted they were able to identify to the characters portrayed by Aga and JOHN LLOYD, who played the brothers, and Claudine. They even identified with the character of Pokwang, who portrayed Claudine’s best friend.
"Tumama talaga ng husto sa puso namin ang istorya ng Dubai," said an OFW (overseas Filipino worker), who works as a cargo dispatcher, the same job which the character of Aga as Raffy played in the movie. The OFW added, "Yes, we are working here for our family."
For his work, he said, he gets P20,000 a month, which is not much. But he explains: "Pero mabuti na ito kesa manatili ka sa Pilipinas na walang makuhang trabaho."
The guy is a business management graduate from a university in Quezon City.
The Star Cinema group was composed of Malou Santos, managing director, Tess Fuentes, producer (of Dubai) and JD Ching, promo department, Star Cinema.
Heading the ABS-CBN entourage was no less than Gabby Lopez, CEO. With him were Jeff Remigio, assistant vice president, ABS-CBN Global and Jeff’s assistant, Jon Dalusong.
In London, the group was well-attended by Raffy Jison, managing director for ABS-CBN Europe and Danny Buenafe, London Bureau News Chief.
